In 2012 this Polar Bear was the highlight of my day as I toured the city of Berlin. Her name is Tonja. Last year she had a baby cub named Hertha. What picture is your favourite? Writing about our joys and our frustrations can be a great way to process the many emotions we feel when our world is so different. These thoughts can be recorded personally or they can be shared.
One place kids can share their writing is The Kids Write. It's a website specifically for kids to share their of life under lockdown. It's open to all ages and any where in the world because this is global shared experience. Even if writing isn't going to be shared. Reading about the thoughts and experiences of others is a great way to know we are in this together. Pictures are really are worth 1000 words. Such amazing stories can come from just a single image. Images create emotions and remind us of our own stories. For beginning language learners pictures are an easy prompt towards discovering new vocabulary. In Picture Writing Prompts every month I upload some of my own pictures in hopes of inspiring your writing. But there is also a website called Once Upon a Picture. Read on for writing prompts associated with this picture from Once Upon a Picture.
Writing Prompts can come from anywhere and anything. Take this quarantine art challenge for example. The Getty Museum put a challenge out for people to try and recreate famous works of art while they can't come see the art in person. Some people take it seriously and try to look just like the original. Others like making it a joke and use toilet paper roles or cleaning supplies to recreate parts of the picture. If you could recreate any work of art, what would you choose and why? How would you do it? Would you do a serious copy or a silly one? Here is an article from Modern Met with more examples.
You can also Search #gettymuseumchallenge on Instagram or Twitter. Last week I provided a PDF to make a small book for Mom for Mother's day. But these books are huge compared to the mini books found in Queen Mary's Doll House. This Doll "house" is more of a Doll "Castle" and was made for our current Queen's grandmother in 1921. But this isn't an ordinary Dollhouse! It has electricity, running water and a real library with real books. Watch the video below for some more interesting facts about this unique Doll House. Baking something fun for Mom is a great little gift, plus reading or Listening and following directions is a great way to practice your English skills. One Simple Recipe you can try are Scones! A Great and easy gift for your mom could be a Mother's Day Word Search. You could hide describing words and traits about your mom, names of people in your family or even all the different nicknames you have for your mom. Here is a website to help with your Word Search Creations. If you want a harder Challenge, you could give your mom a Mother's Day Crossword Puzzle. You have write clues about each word in your puzzle. This is a great way to test your vocabulary skills too.
Here is a Crossword Creator Website. Sunday May 10th is Mother's Day, so this week I will be posting some easy Mother's day "gift" ideas that double as a way to learn/practice your English Skills. Today's is a Cinquain Poem. A Cinquain is a 5 line poem that has a very specific word order and pattern to the lines. Unlike Rhyming poems, Cinquains are little bit easier to create because you don't have search for specific rhymes or even write sentences. Here is the Pattern: Line 1: One Noun that could also act as a Title Line 2: Two Adjectives that describe Line 1 Line 3: Three Verbs (action words) ending with -ing that go with Line 1 Line 4: A Four word phrase that matches the topic Line 5: One more Noun that sums up the poem
